what is Matariki?

There is an increased awareness among New Zealanders of the place of Te Reo Māori in Aotearoa, our unique cultural identity and the wider cultural traditions of Māori. One of the most significant celebrations in the Māori calendar is Matariki, the indigenous New Year. There are many things you could do to mark Matariki in your own special way. Matariki is a time to gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

Matariki is a star cluster which appears in the night sky during mid-winter, according to the Maramataka. Māori respect many cycles in nature which indicate favourable times for certain activities. This double sided  calendar and booklet aims to both explore and explain Matariki and it's importance in the ancient world.
